Puppy 6 Week update

July 31, 2008

Forgive me for no week 5 update. For those of you long time owners, you already know this. For you new owners, I have a family member very dear to all of us that has been battling a terminal illness. We started hospice for him and although we have several months yet, we have been working to make sure he is comfortable, loved, and in no pain. The puppies were wonderful to come home too. Jeff has been holding down the fort and making sure all continues to go as planned for the love and care of puppies. I am the person who updates the web pages and blog; so that part is running slower I am afraid. I take the pictures (which is why you see Jeff in so many of the shots J )…

Today, is officially week 6 that begins with their first set of shots and microchipping at our vet clinic. The puppies all had a bath and their nails clipped. All the puppies are I think “spoken for” and going to the perfect homes. Sometimes we have someone that does not send in payment or changes plans but I think they are all spoken for at this point. I could have sworn that Bubbles would go to an older woman looking for companionship, but we shall wait and see. She will do great with a family but that was just my feeling on her.

This week will unfold to be very busy on our end! We go to solid food, begin to wean off Libby, visit Vet and just romp and explore and learn this week. We will be pondering Libby’s desexing as well; as we chat with the vet about the best time for her health wise..thank you Libby for the wonderful puppies you have produced! Time to go strictly queen of my lap and queen mother to others.

This is THE week in the puppy world for finalizing their pack order, learning the rules of the road by mom, auntie Belle and Chief correction, This is when the pack starts saying you were a cute puppy but lets understand the rules. This is very important in their development as they move from our pack to yours.

We finalize payments, start pondering shipment, de-sexing this week and puppies venture into the world more. Our backyard sectioned as puppy/dog proof fully enclosed and no other animal other than ours has ventured in. Wha-hooo! It is fun to watch their noses go “wild” as they experience the new smells and sights and sounds. They will start watching the doggie door with a tilt in their head.. you can almost read them as they think.. where did the older dogs go? And .. shortly after that..how can I do that?

I so love the whole development period but; sigh; this is my favorite week as they move to being a full on baby dog, personalities really unfold and “Kleenex” we prepare them to leave the nest.

At the end of this week they will move from exploring a crate all together; which is fun and to me they like to all crawl into the cave… it helps them like the crate.. to spend time by themselves in their own “crate” so they can prepare for coming to you and being away from the pack. We expose them to noises they might hear on planes (a truck ride with mom is included) just so they will not be stressed. They then are rewarded and loved.. it is all part of our process to prepare them.

They start out hating the separation in their crate but in the end they get comfortable and we reward them for being good puppies with romps and love. They also are listening to Norah Jones and lately some Van Morrison, the TV and are exposed to almost all the typical house sounds. The Vacuum is not one of them, as we have solid floors downstairs.. although it run it upstairs so they can hear it.

They do get exposed to a hair dryer during the grooming/bathing process; but I prefer to let them dry naturally in the sun if the weather is permitting. Other Dishwasher,

Food wise the are slowly being added a bit of dry food to the wet; and get a bit of some slightly cooked ground venison added to their meal to help them with the teething process and num num “fresh meat”.

Ugodog is what they naturally use to go potty and helps in the beginning training process. More coming later but the puppies with no work from me are all going there the majority of the time.

By now, you should have all completed your puppy application, are thinking of names and are reading up to prepare for the most awesome puppies..not that I am partial or anything. You have sent me your family scent blankets and picked out names for registration. You are shopping for the basics but not going crazy!!! A good crate, puppy shampoo, grooming tools, old blankets and towels and most important “training materials”. Hopefully you’re also getting a puppy ID tag and preparing for the leash, collar, and packing the “picking up puppy” materials that I list on my resource site. Teething Toys, bowls, your vet visit should also be on your to do list. Our second grade neighbor continues to come to visit with puppies and let them experience children. She is wonderful and I consider her one of the “socialization team” along with our puppies and cat, Elsa who they might meet later this week.

As always, I wish you as much success, love and magical moments as our Labradoodles bring us. And, remember, you all promised you would stay in contact and send me pictures!!! We are here for the duration.

Gracie and Chief litter due Aug. 16th”ish”

July 31, 2008

Gracie, owned by the Kizers and our Chief are expecting her first litter around August 16. We will be going with the Kizers for Gracie’s first xray and hopefully I can get a picture to upload it.  We both are very excited about this litter and the Kizers currently are planning to whelp with our assistance. Conact me if your interested in a puppy from this litter.

Two of the puppies are spoken for at this point and we are taking two more applications. One is a breeder looking at a female puppy and the other is probably a male that will go work in an assistive care facility in Hawaii. I am hoping we get a puppy like our Blaze, who was my brother’s favorite from our very first litter; but time will tell.

I will keep you updated as we go.

Our Litter weekly update…

July 18, 2008

The 4 week olds are now becoming more vocal and turning into fun puppies. They are climbing in and out of the whelp box with tails wagging as they explore the world around them. Their ears are open for noises, their noses are always sniffing the air to process what they hear, see, and smell… all that is new in the world to them. They are mouthing each other and things to figure out what things are as their taste is added to their sense. Water is fun to walk in and try to lap up. Mom comes and they go from exploring happy puppies to noisy puppies and thinking they are starving when she arrives. They have transitioned from mom laying down to nurse, to her standing and they eat standing up a sign it is time to introduce their first meal which happens tonight.

There are cutting teeth now and this starts their next two weeks into eating solid foods. Something they will be doing the rest of their lives. The UgoDog litter training has been introduced and they are already starting to get the hand of it. They step outside of their whelp pen more often then not to do their business.

Mother Libby is now allowing Auntie Belle to come into to the whelp box and smell, clean and play with the puppies as she loosens her restrictions on baby access. She trusts Belle but up to know she has been on momma protection mode, another sure sign they are getting ready to not only meet other pack members, but the voyage has begun for their standing on their own. Chief stands at the whelp door watching, smelling and wagging his tail…awaiting his invite in to visit and play with his new pack buddies. Libby just looks at him; he will know when she says enter. He looks expectantly every time; reminding me of someone saying, now? Okay how about now? Now?… I think it will be soon, but it is Libby’s call as she is the Queen Mother.

Chew toys will be introduced for them to play with and their pack has a firm pack order already established. When not sleeping they are playing and climbing on each other and attempting a gaited run; this next week the run historically happens, with legs going to fast for their bodies. They are handled daily, slightly stressed, and are ready for another nail clipping this evening and a brushing will be introduced so they get ready for grooming and handling. Ah, raising of puppies, it is a tough job but we are up to it. J Puppy breath, talking and petting takes priority over weeding the garden to raise a proper puppy.

Near the end of this next week they will get to experience their first bath and have their picture taken for their pedigree. They have been registered with IALA now and we will schedule their first round of shots. All the weeks hold something magical to us but this week really marks their move into future puppy/dog status as they take yet another paw forward into the world.

For those who are getting Blossom and Sparkie, now is the time to be reading and thinking of bedding location and getting ready for a puppy to come to you. Read my book and supply suggestions (which continues to grow thanks to previous puppy owners) and welcome to the family. I look forward to see who will be getting Trustie and Bubbles as it all unfolds.

Puppy update from week 3 into week 4

July 15, 2008

The puppies have the walk down and the tail wagging and mouthing has turned up a notch. They are practicing talking, still shocked when a bark comes out of their mouth and looks around as if to say where did that noise come from? I can now see personalities emerge as their pack order gets more developed. By the end of this week we should have teeth emerging, their running started.. puppy piles for everyone! Puppy breath, sweet puppy breath is here along with tentative kisses. This week water will be introduced along with a crate without a door for them to explore and cuddle up in. Ugodog will be introduced which is a indoor potty training system that is amazing. Coming up after that will be more socialization within their pack, small stressors , toys and rice/goat milk introduction. As of today, Blossom is spoken for as is Sparkie. Trustie and Bubbles are available.
